Patent Agent Trainee
Unique employment opportunity for recent/upcoming Engineering Graduates

Ade & Company Inc. is looking to expand their roster in 2025 with the addition of a new patent agent trainee to their experienced team of patent practitioners.  In this position, the successful candidate will be performing various patent agent duties under the guidance of a licensed patent agent. To become a patent agent in Canada, one must pass a qualifying examination. In order to be eligible for writing the exam, a candidate must have at least 24 months of trainee experience in the area of Canadian patent practice , including preparation and prosecution of patent applications.

A patent agent acts to represent inventors and patent owners before the Patent Office in an effort to obtain patent protection. Patent agents' duties include (i) working with the inventor to gain a thorough understanding of the invention, (ii) assessing the patentability of inventions, (iii) drafting a specification document that sufficiently describes the invention so as to teach anyone else who is skilled in the field of the invention to be able to reproduce and work the invention, (iv) drafting patent claims to accompany the specification which define the exclusive rights sought by the patentee, (v) prosecuting the patent application before the patent office in order to obtain grant of a patent, and (vi) providing opinions as to whether the claims of an issued patent are infringed upon.

Successful patent agents are rewarded with a career which allows them to utilize their technical expertise outside of traditional academia and engineering environments while exposing them to the latest inventions and innovations. Patent agent compensation is comparable to that seen in a prosperous law practice.
